Clinical waste
Clinical waste is infectious waste from the treatment and care of people and animals. Examples include sharp objects such as hypodermic needles, scalpels and pipettes, tissue and fluid specimens.
Disposal options
- Household quantities of clinical waste such as used tissues, bandages and home swab tests can go in the landfill bin.
- Drugs and pharmaceuticals (used or unused) must be taken back to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
- Sharps and syringe disposal containers are located across the ACT.
- Return veterinary drugs back to a vet for safe disposal.
Commercial quantities
- If you are storing, treating, moving or disposing of clinical waste, you must follow the requirements in the Clinical Waste Manual 1991.
