The weather this week will be mostly fine with a chance of showers, which may impact some of our work. Our planned maintenance and infrastructure work for the week is outlined below. It is subject to weather and any required operational changes.

Key updates in your region

Belconnen

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Weed control

Crews will be weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Laneways in Cook, Macquarie and Weetangera.
  • Mowing obstacles in Cook, Macquarie and Weetangera.
  • spaying and removing suckers in Belconnen and Bruce.

Abandoned shopping trolley patrols

The ACT Government will this week collect and impound trolleys in areas outside of shopping centre precincts in Belconnen. Inspections will now be undertaken fortnightly in different parts of Canberra.

You can help by reporting any discarded shopping trolley to the retailer it belongs to. It is a requirement by law that the retailer’s name and a relevant contact number is available on every trolley. You can report via an app, phone number or web form. Horticultural maintenance

Works will be carried out in the following areas:

  • Underpasses in Charnwood and Latham.
  • Evatt and Macquarie shops.

Pedestrian bridge maintenance

  • Flynn/Latham: The pedestrian bridge between Ginninderra Drive and Companion Crescent will be temporarily closed for maintenance work for one day this week - Wednesday 3 July 2024. (daylight hours only).

Rabbit control

Rabbit control operations occur roughly once every 6-13 weeks depending on inspection outcomes. There are no planned control works this week.

Street sweeping

Crews will be sweeping cycle paths on Belconnen Way and Kuringa Drive.

Tree programs

This week the planting team will be:

  • Re-mulching, removing stakes and guards and carrying out formative pruning on young trees in Macgregor.
  • Delivering mulch to community groups in Bruce, Kaleen and Scullin.

Playground maintenance

Drop tests and inspections of newly installed rubber softfall will be undertaken this week at Hawker shops.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Belconnen region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Belconnen skatepark half-pipe: Construction of the competition standard half-pipe was completed on Friday 28 June 2024. Minor works are continuing on-site this week before the half-pipe opens to the public.
  • Macquarie shops improvements: Works are commencing on site on Monday 1 July 2024 and are expected to take around 2 months to complete, weather permitting. There will be temporary changes for road users and pedestrians while these works are underway.
  • Kippax Group Centre upgrades: Construction works continue on the first stage of the project on the northern section of Hardwick Crescent, including demolition, service realignments and new stormwater and pavement installation. There is a road closure in place while these works are underway. This existing road closure is expected to be in place for approximately 4 months before works will move to the southern section.
  • Lake Ginninderra path upgrade: The works to improve the walking and cycling path along the lake edge are progressing well. Signage has been installed to assist users in accessing the Birrigai Cafe. There are changes to the Ginninderra Parkrun course while construction is underway. Central Canberra

Line marking

  • City: Occasional lane closures on Alinga Street at the City bus interchange (west of Northbourne Avenue)  from 10pm Sunday 30 June until 5:30am Monday 1 July 2024 (weather permitting).

Road resurfacing

  • Parkes: Morshead Drive - eastbound from Kings Avenue to Russell Drive. Road closed for road resurfacing from 6:00 am Sunday 7 July until 6:00 am Monday 8 July 2024. More information on the National Capital Authority website.

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Crews will be mowing in Bass Gardens (Griffith) and Lennox Gardens (Yarralumla).

Weed control

Crews will be weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Campbell, Fyshwick, Pialligo and Turner.
  • Mowing obstacles in Barton, Deakin, Pialligo, Turner and Yarralumla.

Physical weed removal will be carried out on Barry Drive, Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue.

Street sweeping

Street sweeping will continue with the regular weekly winter sweeping period in Ainslie, Barton, Braddon, Campbell, Deakin, Dickson, Downer, Forrest, Griffith, Hackett, Kingston, Lyneham, Manuka, Narrabundah, O'Connor, Red Hill, Reid, Turner, Watson and Yarralumla.

Priority will be given to streets with the heaviest leaf fall.

Guardrail repair work

Occasional lane closures are expected for the following works:

  • Kowen: Sections of Kings Highway past the NSW/ACT border towards Bungendore.
  • Watson: Federal Highway between Horse Park Drive and Antill Street.

Horticultural maintenance

Works will be carried out in the following areas:

  • Parks and open spaces in O'Connor and Turner.
  • Shopping areas in Dickson, Downer and O'Connor.
  • Red Hill lookout.
  • The Hyatt Hotel public carpark in Yarralumla.

Tree programs

This week the planting team will be delivering mulch to community groups in Campbell and Dickson.

Road works

  • Parkes: There will be occasional lane closures on Kings Avenue (eastbound direction) as part of the John Gorton Campus Car Park project. More information on the Department of Finance website.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the central region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Inner north playground: Construction is expected to commence this week. Site fencing has been installed in preparation for construction to begin. Construction is expected to take around 12 months and be complete in the middle of 2025 (weather permitting).
  • Telopea Park improvements: Replacement tree planting commenced on Friday 21 June 2024 and is expected to be completed by early July.
  • Age friendly suburbs: Path network upgrades at Reid are continuing and will be completed in early July 2024.
  • Beltana Road upgrade, Pialligo: Design work to address the stormwater issue which arose in late 2024 due to significant rainfall is progressing well. The one-way temporary traffic management will stay in place until construction works can resume later in 2024.

Gungahlin

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Weed control

Crews will be weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Mowing obstacles in Gungahlin, Hall and Harrison.

Horticultural maintenance

Works will be carried out in suburban parks in Franklin and Harrison.

Rabbit control

Rabbit control operations occur roughly once every 6-13 weeks depending on inspection outcomes. There are no planned control works this week.

Street sweeping

Crews will be sweeping footpaths and cycle paths on Gungahlin Drive.

Tree programs

This week the planting team will be re-mulching, removing stakes and guards and carrying out formative pruning on young trees in Bonner.

Playground maintenance

Crace recreation playground has re-opened following rubber softfall repair works.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Gungahlin region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Gundaroo Drive duplication: Temporary traffic arrangements are in place including reduced speed limits on Gundaroo Drive while the current construction activity continues between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive.
  • Franklin dog park: Work is underway to deliver a new dog park in the open space bound by Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue in Franklin. Dog agility elements, furniture and boulders will be installed over the coming weeks. Construction is expected to be complete and the park open to the public in the summer of 2024-25 (weather permitting). The community can expect to see trees, logs and boulders start to appear on site soon.
  • Yerrabi Pond District Park upgrades: Work is continuing on the installation of additional lighting along Mirrabei Drive and down towards Bizant Street.

Tuggeranong

Mowing program

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Crews will be mowing on Athllon Drive and Drakeford Drive.

Weed control

Crews will be weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Calwell, Conder, Gowrie, Isabella Plains, Monash, Oxley, Richardson and Wanniassa.
  • Mowing obstacles in Calwell, Conder, Gowrie, Kambah, Monash, Oxley, Richardson and Wanniassa.

Physical weed removal will be carried out on Athllon Drive and Erindale Drive.

Guardrail repair work

Occasional lane closures are expected for the following works:

  • Wanniassa: Erindale Drive and Sternberg Crescent intersection.

Horticultural maintenance

Works will be carried out in laneways in Kambah.

Tree programs

This week the planting team will be:

  • Re-mulching, removing stakes and guards and carrying out formative pruning on young trees in Calwell.
  • Delivering mulch to community groups in Kaleen.

Playground maintenance

Drop tests and inspections of newly installed rubber softfall will be undertaken this week at Burgoyne Street playground in Bonython and Kambah adventure playground.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Tuggeranong region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Sulwood Drive upgrades: Sulwood Drive is closed to all traffic between Inkster Street and Livingston Avenue until early August (weather permitting). This is for the first stage of the upgrades including the road pavement rehabilitation, installation of traffic lights at Mannheim Street and access improvements for the Mount Taylor carpark.
  • Tuggeranong foreshore improvements: The boardwalk works are complete. Final works are continuing and the area is expected to reopen in early July.
  • Mugga Lane landfill rehabilitation works: Preparatory works are underway at Mugga Lane landfill to enable a trial of a more environmentally friendly landfill rehabilitation process known as phytocapping. Phytocapping uses native plants, shrubs, grasses and trees to cap landfill cells and create a barrier between them and the above ground environment. Works are approximately 50% complete and are expected to continue for the next few months, weather and conditions permitting. The work has potential to cause odour at times in neighbouring suburbs due to the short-term disruption of landfill materials. The ACT Government apologises for any inconvenience. Waste management operators are working under strict protocols agreed with the ACT Environment Protection Authority to minimise odour where possible. These protocols include covering disrupted landfill at the end of each day, and postponing works around inclement weather (such as high wind and rainfall).

Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo

Street sweeping

Street sweeping will continue with the regular weekly winter sweeping period in Garran and Hughes.

The seasonal mowing program for suburbs and areas of open space is now complete. Suburbs and roads will be inspected weekly and mowed as required.

Underpass maintenance

  • Phillip: The cyclist and pedestrian underpass at Melrose Drive (between Brewer Street and Corinna Street) is temporarily closed for repair work. Two southbound lanes on Melrose Drive are also closed with a reduced speed limit. More information on the City Services website.

Weed control

Crews will be weed spraying in the following areas:

  • Arterial and collector roads in Holder.
  • Laneways in Fisher and Waramanga.
  • Shopping areas in Fisher and Waramanga.
  • Mowing obstacles in Chifley, Fisher, Holder, Isaacs, O'Malley, Phillip and Wright.

Horticultural maintenance

Works will be carried out in the following areas:

  • Laneways in Curtin and Lyons.
  • Swinger Hill.

Guardrail repair work

Occasional lane closures are expected for the following works:

  • Farrer - Yamba Drive (southbound - near Dookie Street)
  • Monash – Isabella Drive and Ashley Drive intersection

Tree programs

This week the planting team will be re-mulching, removing stakes and guards and carrying out formative pruning on young trees in Lyons.

Stormwater maintenance

North Weston Pond: Maintenance work is underway at the pond nearest to RSPCA. This work includes addressing degradation on the rock filled spillway to prevent further damage which occurs during major storm events. The water level will be lowered for the duration of the works which is expected to be approximately 2 months (weather permitting). During this time there is no access for pedestrians. Detour signage is in place.

Current infrastructure activities

There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo region. Below are the key updates for this week:

  • Woden Bus Depot: Construction is well underway on the new Woden Bus Depot with significant progress made on site since the second phase of works began in November 2022. In the coming months work will start to install additional traffic lights at the intersection of Athllon Drive and Shea Street to facilitate access in and out of the bus depot. Tree removal is also underway to facilitate these works.
  • Molonglo River Bridge: Works are progressing well on site, including excavation and filling work for the John Gorton Drive road corridor near the abutment on the south side of the river. Vegetation stripping has been completed for the abutment on the north side of the river while excavation for the Pier 2 footings continues on the north side of the river.
  • Streeton Drive intersection upgrades: Construction is underway. Heysen Street is closed at Streeton Drive for approximately 3 months (weather permitting).
