There is lots of sun and clear skies in the forecast this week. Our planned works are outlined below. They are subject to weather and any required operational changes.
Join Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 2 March 2025. It's the nation's largest community-based environmental event, with the ACT Government hosting events in Harrison and Gordon. Find out more about Clean Up Australia Day.
Licensing and compliance officers will be targeting abandoned shopping trolleys and unsecure vehicle loads across Canberra this week. Camera operations are underway at various locations to identify vehicles that are carrying loads where rubbish could fall off onto the road. Please remember to secure your load on the road. Unsecure items can create dangerous projectiles and are a major safety hazard.

Swimming areas: Bargang beach and Yerra beach at Lake Ginninderra are closed for swimming due to a bacteria alert. For a full list of swimming areas and their status see water quality.

Infrastructure
There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Belconnen region including:
Gundaroo Drive duplication: Construction is continuing on the path under the bridge and towards Baldwin Drive. It is expected to be completed in February 2025. Stormwater works at the corner of Baldwin Drive are also expected to be completed in this month. Works are underway under the bridge and will be completed in March 2025. Landscaping works are ongoing, including mature tree planting. The speed limit will remain at 60 km/h between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive to ensure the contractor’s team remain safe while they complete these remaining works.
Kippax Group Centre improvements: Upgrades to the Kippax Group Centre are complete. Minor works continue to finalise the project and are expected to be complete in March 2025. This work has no impact to traffic arrangements along Hardwick Crescent.
Mowing: The seasonal mowing program is underway with mowing in Barton, O’Connor, Turner and Yarralumla. Mowing will also be underway along Adelaide Avenue and Lady Denman Drive.
Roads and paths: Sections of London Circuit closed to motorists and cyclists between Northbourne Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue for light rail stage 2A. Crews are also undertaking:
Construction of the Garden City Cycleway along Torrens Street and Ijong Street, from Cooyong Street to Limestone Avenue, is complete and open to the public. Please be mindful of the changed conditions along the cycleway. Pedestrians and cyclists have right of way. Please exercise caution and look out for vehicles entering and exiting driveways.
Works are continuing to deliver Stage 1C of the cycleway between Limestone Avenue and Majura Avenue, along Angas Street. A section of Angas Street, close to the intersection of Limestone Avenue, remains closed until Friday 28 February 2025 to install the raised zebra crossing. Detours are in place while the road is closed.
Telopea Park improvements: Work has commenced on a new 95 metre long, 3 metre wide asphalt path between Gosse Street and Darling Street, through Telopea Park. There is no pedestrian access along the desire line while the new path is under construction. However, all other pedestrian paths in the park remain open. Some traffic management measures will be in place on Telopea Park between Jardine Street and Wentworth Avenue while construction is underway.
Goliath Court stormwater improvements: The intersection of Bluebell Street and Macpherson Street is closed and is expected to reopen by Friday 28 February 2025, weather permitting. Access to the shops is via Sargood Street and Bluebell Street (excluding the intersection with Macpherson Street). Parking restrictions are in place while works are underway. Waste removal access for the adjacent apartments and deliveries to shops is being facilitated by the contractor.
Sherbrooke Street Active Travel Street trial: Local residents and key stakeholders are invited to provide feedback to shape the preliminary design for the Active Travel Street on Sherbrooke Street in Ainslie. The preliminary designs will then be shared with the broader community later in 2025.
Mowing: The seasonal mowing program is underway with mowing in Crace and Nicholls. Mowing will also be underway along Clarrie Hermes Drive and Gungahlin Drive.
Rabbit control: Rabbit control works are underway in Amaroo, Bonner and Forde.
Roads and paths: Crews are undertaking litter picking on Curran Drive, Victoria Street and Bellenden Street.
Sportsgrounds: Gungahlin enclosed oval is closed for maintenance.
Trees: The temporary skip bins in Amaroo, Ngunnawal and Nicholls will be removed this week as storm clean-up is wrapping up. Crews are also:

watering young trees in Crace, Ngunnawal and Palmerston.
Construction at Wunderlich Street is complete and the amenities area is set to reopen to the community this week. Some areas with new grass are still cordoned off to allow the grass to grow.
Construction of a new path at Bizant Street is complete and picnic tables have also been installed. The new shelters and toilet cubicle have been delivered to the site. Additional works are required to complete the installation of the toilet as water was found below the ground surface level. This is expected to delay works by up to a few months. The contractor is undertaking further investigations and an update on timing will be provided once these are complete.
Parking improvements also continue near the commercial area of Phyllis Ashton Circuit. Several existing carparks remain unavailable. This area will be used by the contractor undertaking the parking improvements.
ACT parks and reserves: Closures continue at Gibraltar Falls and Woods Reserve. There are a number of closures within Namadgi National Park such as Yankee Hat rock art site, Yankee Hat walking trail from Bogong Creek, Ready-Cut Cottage and a section of Square Rock walking track. Crews will also undertaking pre-burn preparation works for the East West Burn (located west of Uriarra Village near Blue Range Campground). This burn is proposed for autumn 2025 pending favourable weather conditions.
Mowing: The seasonal mowing program is underway with mowing in Bonython, Isabella Plains, Kambah (west) and along Tharwa Drive.
Playgrounds: Softfall top up works are underway at the playground on Limburg Way in Greenway.
Sportsgrounds: Greenway enclosed oval is closed for maintenance. Gordon oval is closed for formal sport due to maintenance activities. Two cricket pitches at Chisholm district playing fields are also being repaired following vandalism.
Swimming areas: Lake Tuggeranong is closed for swimming at Tuggeranong Town Park. For more information including a list of swimming areas and their status see water quality.

Infrastructure
There are a number of infrastructure projects currently underway in the Tuggeranong region including:
Stockyard Spur walking track upgrade: Work is underway to upgrade a section of the Stockyard Spur walking track in Namadgi National Park. Once complete the track will have some new steps, water bars, and be reshaped in parts. The track remains open while the work is underway and work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2025.
Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre upgrades: Work is underway to upgrade and install new BBQ and picnic facilities, walking tracks and an art installation at the Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre. The upgrades aim to provide accessible facilities for the community to enjoy while also recognising the 2020 Orroral Valley bushfire. The Visitors Centre will remain open while work is underway.
Lanyon marketplace improvements: Works are well underway for improvements to the public spaces at Lanyon Marketplace. The Balcombe Street and Sidney Nolan Street intersection is closed to traffic while construction is underway.
Sulwood Drive upgrade: Works are continuing to deliver a new 4 kilometre long and 3 metre wide asphalt walking and cycling path on the southern side of Sulwood Drive between Drakeford Drive and Athllon Drive. Approximately 3 kilometres of new path is open. Minor road works have commenced on the left turn slip lane from Sulwood Drive onto Drakeford Drive as part of the works to provide safe access to the new walking and cycling path.
ACT parks and reserves: Murrays Corner recreation area and Bullen Pines are closed to undertake forestry operations.
Mowing: The seasonal mowing program is underway with mowing in Curtin, Isaacs and O’Malley. Mowing is also underway along Cotter Road and John Gorton Drive.
Roads and paths: Melrose Drive underpass repair work is underway until mid-2025. Crews are also undertaking:
bridge maintenance work on Tuggeranong Parkway at Heysen Street (occasional lane closures in both directions overnight from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am)
Swimming areas: Cotter Campground and a number of areas along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor are closed for swimming due to bacteria alerts. For a full list of swimming areas and their status see water quality.
Trees: Crews are focusing on storm clean-up, pruning and removals in Curtin, Fisher, Lyons and Stirling.
Mawson shops toilet upgrade: The first stage of the demolition of the old toilet is complete. The first stage of construction work is now underway. This includes the construction of new female and unisex accessible toilets.
Beasley Street (Torrens shops) path improvements: This project aims to slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety at Torrens shops. The road width is being narrowed on either side of Basedow Street and Torrens Place where they intersect with Beasley Street. The majority of works are now complete, with the remaining work expected to be finished in March 2025.
Arterial roads are litter picked approximately every 4 weeks. Main roads are also regularly inspected within this period to identify and program the removal of larger litter items.
Barbecues are cleaned twice a week between September and April and once a week for the rest of the year. We manage 125 barbecues across Canberra.
Graffiti is removed within 5 business days of being reported and within one business day if offensive. To report graffiti please go to Fix My Street.
Lakes and waterways adjacent to town and district parks are checked for litter each week. Urban lakes and ponds are litter picked a minimum of 5-6 times a year. There are over 160 urban lakes and ponds around Canberra. Reports of excess litter or illegal dumping are prioritised for removal as soon as possible.
Playgrounds are routinely inspected. We manage over 500 playgrounds across Canberra.
district playgrounds (e.g. Lake Ginninderra) are inspected twice per week
central community playgrounds (e.g. Crace) are inspected every week
local neighbourhood playgrounds (e.g. Duffy) are inspected every fortnight
Public land around shopping centres is routinely cleaned. We manage 90 shopping centres across Canberra and clean them as follows.
town centres (e.g. Woden) and group centres (e.g. Dickson) are cleaned daily
local shops (e.g. Fisher) vary in cleaning from daily to 3 times a week.
Public toilets are cleaned at least once daily. Additionally, reactive cleaning and maintenance is undertaken as required. We manage 73 toilets across Canberra.
Storm clean-up will continue focusing on clearing fallen material along main arterial roads.
Trees under 3 years of age in non‑irrigated areas are generally watered monthly from November to April.
