Lanyon dog park

Current update

Construction is underway for the new Lanyon dog park on the corner of Woodcock Drive and Jim Pike Avenue in the Lanyon Valley. The dog park is expected to be open in winter 2025, weather permitting.

From the week commencing Monday 27 January 2025, work will commence to build a new path on the eastern side of Jim Pike Avenue to increase pedestrian access to the dog park. One tree will be removed, and minor verge and utility works on the corner of Birchall Street and Jim Pike Avenue will also begin.

These works are expected to take approximately 4 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work is expected to be conducted between 7 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday. If required, work may be undertaken on weekends between 8 am and 4 pm.

The expected timeline for project completion includes time for the grass and landscaping to establish before the park opens. During this period, there may be minimal visible activity, with the occasional contractor visit to oversee and maintain the landscaping.

Project description

Construction is underway on Lanyon dog park.

The ACT Government is building a new fenced dog park in the Lanyon Valley to provide more spaces for dog owners in south Tuggeranong to exercise and socialise their dogs off-leash. The new dog park will be located on the corner of Jim Pike Avenue and Woodcock Drive in Gordon.

Fenced dog exercise areas contribute to the effective management of dogs in public spaces by providing controlled space where dogs can freely exercise and play. They also assist in alleviating the pressure on shared recreational areas.

Key features

  • 3,630 sq metre fenced dog park
  • Two dual-gate entry ways
  • Bike rail, bin and signage at the main entrance
  • Accessible concrete path
  • Small picnic shelter, seating and drinking fountain
  • Two separated grass play areas and dog agility areas
  • Plantings and native trees for canopy cover
  • 1.8 metre high black chain link fence
  • Crushed granite car park with 2 accessible car spaces on concrete (development application approved).

Location and design

Construction

Construction activities include:

  • fencing of the worksite and installation of tree protection fencing
  • small diggers and front loaders for importing and placing gravel for the carpark as well as soil, mulch, trees and other plantings
  • demolition, excavation and transportation of materials using bob cats, excavators and small trucks
  • concrete trucks for the installation of paths and furniture
  • installation of new fencing, dog play elements, furniture and signage.

Engagement

In 2022 the community provided feedback on the concept plan which outlined the proposed mix and location of facilities at the new Lanyon dog park. This included, parking, access gates, paths, trees, water stations and waste bins as well as recreational infrastructure such as shade structures and seating. We heard 81% of respondents supported the draft design provided. There have been amendments made to the draft design including different types of plantings to provide a safer experience for dogs. There will also be improvements to access. This includes accessible parking, an accessible loop path and a fenced area for longer walks immediately behind the dog park. Additional space will also be included to allow for the Bicentennial National Trail. The most popular request we heard during consultation was for separate, well-sized play areas for small and large dogs. The new dog park will have separate small and large areas.
