Stormwater network improvements

Current update

Work is continuing around Goliath Court in O’Connor. Construction began in April 2024 and after a brief hiatus in July 2024 the works recommenced in January 2025 at Sargood Street and Bluebell Street.

In order to facilitate these works, the intersection of Bluebell Street and Macpherson Street is currently closed and is expected to reopen by Friday 28 February 2025, weather permitting.

The upgrades will make the stormwater network more environmentally friendly and help prevent water from entering the O’Connor shops in storm events.

These works are expected to take 2 months to complete, weather permitting.

More information about these works are below.

Project description

We are improving our stormwater network to make it more environmentally friendly and safer for Canberrans. Rolling upgrades are being planned around Canberra to better manage water movements. ACT Healthy Waterways is improving the quality of water entering our lakes and waterways.

About the stormwater network

Urban development increases the number of surfaces from which rainfall flows into the stormwater network. Rainfall flows from the roofs of buildings, paved areas, roads, car parks, grassed areas and gardens into the stormwater network.

The stormwater network may reach capacity during heavy rainfall. Excess water flows through a network of drains, channels and floodways into bodies of water and retarding basins. These lakes and ponds also provide recreational opportunities and enhances the urban landscape.

Projects

The following projects are underway:

Kippax Group Centre stormwater improvements

Stormwater upgrades will be delivered in and around the Kippax Group Centre from early 2025. The current project is focused on 3 sites:

1. Southern Cross Drive bridge underpass (northeast of the Kippax Group Centre and adjacent to Florey Drive): These works will include widening of the bridge underpass, construction of new stormwater infrastructure (new sumps and a swale) and landscaping/reinstatement.

2. Moyes Crescent, Holt: These works will include construction of new stormwater infrastructure (stormwater pipes, sumps and a swale) and landscaping/reinstatement.

3. Starke Street, Holt: These works will include clearing of the existing overgrown swale and landscaping/reinstatement.

More information, including timeframes, will be provided prior to commencement of construction.

Narrabundah stormwater improvements

For more information see Narrabundah stormwater improvements.

Duffy stormwater improvements

Stormwater upgrades will be delivered at 2 locations in Duffy over the coming years.

1. Duffy Oval: This project will deliver earthworks and stormwater upgrades to the southern boundary of Duffy Oval. Duffy Oval functions as an existing retarding basin with these works to direct overland flows into this basin.

2. Eucumbene Drive: This project will deliver stormwater upgrades along Eucumbene Drive from its intersection with Cotter Road.

More information, including timeframes, will be provided ahead of construction beginning.

Goliath Court, O'Connor

Work is underway to deliver stormwater upgrades in and around Goliath Court in O’Connor. Construction began in April 2024 and after a brief hiatus in July 2024 the works are recommencing from mid-January 2025 at Sargood Street and Bluebell Street.

The upgrades will make the stormwater network more environmentally friendly and help prevent water from entering the O’Connor shops in storm events.

These works are expected to take 2 months to complete, weather permitting.

The works will be delivered in 3 stages as outlined below. Temporary traffic and pedestrian changes will be in place to allow the contractor to safely complete the works. Signage will be in place to safely detour the community around the works.

Stage 1 – 14 to 19 January 2025

There will be service investigations in and around Bluebell Street and Sargood Street. There will be no major impacts to vehicle movements or access to the shops during this work.

Stage 2 – from 28 January to mid February 2025

The Sargood Street and Macpherson Street intersection will be closed for approximately 2 weeks, weather permitting, to allow the raised vehicle crossing to be installed.

To facilitate safe vehicle movements during construction, the car parks on the southern side of Sargood Street, immediately in front of the public toilets, will be closed. During this time the car parks on the northern side of Sargood Street, immediately in front of the shops, will be linemarked with fresh paint and changed to 90 degree parking. Access to these car parks will remain available via Bluebell Street.

Once complete, the car parks on both sides will be reinstated as angled parking, with 4 fewer car parks to make way for upgraded disability parking spaces and 6 new motorcycle parking bays.

Stage 3

The Bluebell Street and Macpherson Street intersection will be closed for approximately 3 weeks, weather permitting, to enable the raised vehicle crossing to be installed.

We understand that deliveries and waste removal occur via Bluebell Street. The project team will be in touch with impacted businesses to discuss how to best avoid disruption.

Additionally, pram crossings were installed at the Bluebell Street intersection in October 2024. However, to further increase the safety of this high traffic area, the new raised vehicle crossings at Bluebell Street and Sargood Street will be plain concrete to increase their visibility to motorists. There will also be tactile indicators installed on the ground at all approaches to the raised vehicle crossings.
