Solar lighting at concrete bus shelters


Project description

Bus shelters (concrete or glass) owned by the ACT Government are not currently independently lit. They typically rely on overhead streetlighting for illumination. While glass shelters easily allow for streetlighting to penetrate the interior of the shelter, the iconic Canberra concrete shelter’s design does not afford such illumination. As such, there is a perception the concrete bus shelters can be unsafe at night. Installing low level lighting within a concrete shelter will help to improve personal security for users and contribute towards improved wellbeing for the wider community.

A solar lighting trial started at five concrete bus shelters in the industrial suburb of Mitchell in 2021. Solar lighting was installed at an additional 31 locations in 2023. These are listed below.
