Construction activities completed

The following works are complete between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive:

• Completion of the new bridge over Ginninderra Creek (northbound) near Owen Dixon Drive and construction of the new northbound carriageway between Baldwin Drive and Chuculba Crescent which both lanes of traffic are currently travelling on.
• Demolition of the existing bridge over Ginninderra Creek (southbound): the new bridge is currently under construction as is the southbound carriageway for traffic travelling towards Belconnen.
• Installation of 2 new bus shelters between Chuculba Crescent and Owen Dixon Drive and construction of path links to the existing community path network. Installation of all electrical infrastructure and traffic signal poles at the Gundaroo Drive and Owen Dixon Drive intersection to facilitate the new traffic lights.
• Replacement of the existing underpasses at Owen Dixon Drive and Chuculba Crescent:

Construction activities to be completed

• Completion of the new bridge over Ginninderra Creek (southbound) and installation of the new road pavement on the southbound carriageway between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive.
• Installation and subsequent operation of the new traffic lights at the Owen Dixon Drive intersection.
• Construction of the new roundabouts at the intersections of Baldwin Drive and Chuculba Crescent and the road connections to the already duplicated lanes.
• Upgrade of an approximately 300 metre section of Owen Dixon Drive from the Gundaroo Drive intersection.
• Landscaping activities in the medians and verges as well as the installation of suburb signage for Giralang and McKellar. There will also be Ngunnawal inspired artwork including gathering circles at the entrance to both suburbs from Gundaroo Drive.
• Demobilisation of the site compound and reinstatement of the areas.
• With significantly higher than average rainfall over the summer and since the project’s commencement, the completion of bridgeworks has been impacted. Major rainfall and flooding in the creek have also impacted works along the section between Chuculba Crescent and Baldwin Drive.

Prior to the commencement of works, a number of approvals were required to facilitate construction activities including a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) and an Erosion Sediment Control and Waste Management Plan. This included a request for a water extraction permit for Giralang Pond (at Smalley Crescent, JPG 167.1 KB).

Approvals were received to lower the Giralang Pond by up to 500mm whilst undertaking bridge works in the upper end of the pond to minimise water ingress into the piers as well as to reduce/eliminate the risk of sediment entering the pond water. A pump for the purposes of water extraction has now been placed - this water will be used for dust control and construction activities for the duration of the project. This area will be reinstated to its original condition upon completion of the project.

The community may also notice controls put in place to support the bridge works. All controls installed in accordance with the approved CEMP. The existing vegetation has not been removed, however geofabric has been placed over it with rock infill placed to provide a safe and stable working platform for the machinery to operate from. Additional controls similar to this are installed downstream to prevent/minimise sediment migration.
